Sump pumps

Replacement, new pumps and where the water goes

A sump pump sits in a pit in the basement floor and pumps groundwater out before it reaches the floor. The pump is only half the job. The other half is where the discharge pipe sends the water, and in several Greater Lowell towns the sewer is not allowed to be that place.

  • Replacement of a failed or worn-out pump is the most common job.
  • New installations add a pit and a discharge line to a basement that has never had one.
  • Rerouting moves an old discharge that was tied into the sewer to an approved outdoor location.

Local rules

Sump pumps and the sanitary sewer

In Tewksbury, the sewer regulations prohibit connecting sump pumps, foundation drains, cellar drains and roof downspouts to the sanitary sewer, and its inflow removal program has included sump pump tie-in investigations (sewer regulations, inflow removal program).

In Tyngsborough, discharging a basement sump pump into the sewer is illegal; the Sewer Commission may run smoke tests and house inspections and assess penalties of up to $5,000 per violation (Tyngsborough Sewer Department).

Elsewhere, check with your town's sewer department before routing a pump anywhere other than outside. Plumbing work on a new or rerouted discharge line needs a licensed plumber; check a license on the state license lookup.

FAQ

Sump pump questions

Can my sump pump drain into the town sewer?

Not in Tewksbury or Tyngsborough. Tewksbury's sewer regulations prohibit connecting sump pumps and foundation drains to the sanitary sewer, and Tyngsborough treats it as illegal, with penalties of up to $5,000 per violation.

How would the town know?

Towns look for these connections. Tewksbury's sewer inflow removal program has included sump pump tie-in investigations, and Tyngsborough says it may run smoke tests and house inspections.

Will a new sump pump fix a wet basement?

Sometimes. A pump moves water that already reaches the pit. Water coming through walls or the floor may also need drainage or waterproofing work, which is a different trade from plumbing.

Is New England Plumbers an emergency service?

No. We review requests and reply by the next business day. If a basement is actively flooding, call a licensed plumber directly.

Is there a charge to use New England Plumbers?

No. The call and the referral are free to homeowners. Any estimate and any work are agreed directly between you and the contractor.
