Gas lines

Gas piping for home appliances

Smell gas? Leave the house and call 911 once you're outside. Don't use switches or try to shut off the gas. State guidance. New England Plumbers is not an emergency service.

Gas fitting covers the piping past the gas meter or regulator and the connection and testing of gas appliances. Common homeowner jobs:

  • Ranges and cooktops when switching from electric.
  • Clothes dryers in a basement or laundry room.
  • Water heaters, which state law names among gas appliances.
  • Standby generators fed from the house gas supply.

Massachusetts rules

Licenses, permits and the fuel gas code

Who may do it. Massachusetts licenses gas fitters and plumbers through the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. A licensed master or journeyman plumber may do gas fitting; a licensed gas fitter may not do plumbing (state consumer fact sheet). Gas fitting is defined to include connecting and testing gas appliances, water heaters among them (M.G.L. c.142 §1).

Permits. Gas fitting permits go only to properly licensed individuals, not apprentices; the one exception is authorized gas company employees. Work can't start until the local inspector issues the permit, and the inspector inspects it (248 CMR 3.05).

The code. Gas piping in Massachusetts follows the state fuel gas code, 248 CMR 4.00 and 5.00, which adopts the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) with state amendments (Board regulations). Check any license on the state license lookup.

Last verified November 2026. New England Plumbers is a referral service and doesn't do gas fitting.

FAQ

Gas line questions

I smell gas. What should I do?

Leave the building right away and call 911 once you're outside. Don't switch lights or appliances on or off, don't open or close windows and don't try to shut off the gas. If you notice the smell outdoors, call your gas company from outside, or 911 if you don't know it. This is the state's own guidance.

Who is allowed to install a gas line?

In Massachusetts, gas fitting must be done by a licensed gas fitter or a licensed plumber; a licensed plumber may do gas fitting, but a gas fitter may not do plumbing. Permits go only to licensed individuals.

Does adding a gas line need a permit?

Yes. Gas fitting work needs a permit from the local plumbing and gas inspector before it starts. Only adjusting an appliance's gas controls, without changing the supply connection or piping, is exempt.

Do you handle gas furnaces and boilers?

We refer gas piping to appliances. Heating system installation and repair is outside what we refer.

Is there a charge to use New England Plumbers?

No. The call and the referral are free to homeowners. Any estimate and any work are agreed directly between you and the contractor.
